The Lost series finale aired Sunday night, and for ages I'd said that I wouldn't watch it because "if I don't see it, then it's not over." But needing some closure lately I ended up catching it anyway with Wes and Isaac, and by the end was close to a tear or two. On the inside.
Been watching this show for a long time, man, but it was an absolutely perfect conclusion to the series.
Sure, okay, it didn't come close to answering all of the show's big mysteries, but broadcast very loud and clear the message "It's not the what that matters along the way, but the who." Why did the statue have four toes? Why did that one bird cry "hurley!"? Who cares, really? Did any of those things really matter to our characters?
There were dozens of small, great moments in the episode: Miles and his duct tape faith. Christian still sporting the suit and white sneakers. Jack's Flying Flocke Punch. Jin and Sun "remembering", regaining their English, and mocking Sawyer while grinning. Claire and Charlie remembering. Juliette and Sawyer and the awkwardness of it, wondering if Jack's son is going to walk in and go "MOM?!" Lupidus being alive. "The Ongoing Hijinks of Hurley & Ben".
The final scenes with Jack's father were killer, as Jack realized the truth of what'd happened and why everyone was gathered together in the church. But the thing that will stand out as absolutely perfect in the course of time was the entire five-minute sequence following Jack's waking up outside the cave. We the viewers think he might be the next monster. He stumbles through the bamboo and we realize where he's going. He's dying alone... where's Vincent?... oh, there he is, good boy. The plane flies over to freedom. Jack's eye closes. And Lost ends.
Best moment of the entire series in hindsight? The first scene of this last season, which opens on the plane with Rose turning to Jack and telling him "You can let go now." Knowing what we know now, it seems this happens the moment after Jack closes his eyes in the bamboo, and dies.
Pretty good discussion of the details here for those who want it, but the site's summary puts it the best:
"This show was fucking awesome."
